Support Without Restriction.

If you’ve ever seen athletes competing with colorful strips of tape on their shoulders, knees, or backs, you’ve seen kinesio taping in action. But kinesio tape isn’t just for elite athletes — it’s a clinically effective tool that can benefit patients of all ages and activity levels dealing with pain, injury, or movement limitations.

What Is Kinesio Taping?

Kinesio taping uses a specialized elastic therapeutic tape — designed to mimic the elasticity of human skin — applied in specific patterns over and around muscles, joints, and soft tissue. Unlike traditional rigid athletic tape, which immobilizes and restricts movement, kinesio tape is designed to move with the body while providing continuous therapeutic support.

How It Works

When applied correctly by a trained physical therapist, kinesio tape creates a gentle lifting effect on the skin and superficial tissue. This microscopic lift:

  • Reduces pressure on pain receptors beneath the skin, providing immediate pain relief
  • Improves lymphatic drainage, reducing swelling and inflammation
  • Enhances proprioception — the body’s awareness of its own position and movement — which supports better movement mechanics
  • Supports muscles and joints without restricting range of motion
  • Facilitates or inhibits muscle activity depending on the direction and tension of application

What Kinesio Tape Can Help With

  • Shoulder instability and rotator cuff injuries
  • Knee pain, including patellofemoral syndrome
  • Ankle sprains and instability
  • Low back pain and postural support
  • Edema and post-surgical swelling reduction
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Neck pain and cervicogenic headaches
  • Sports injuries and muscle strains

How Long Does It Last?

Kinesio tape is water-resistant and can typically be worn for 3–5 days, including through showering and light swimming. Your therapist will teach you how to apply and remove it properly, and may provide you with tape to use between sessions for ongoing support.

Kinesio taping is most effective when integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan that includes manual therapy and therapeutic exercise.
